Governance

Guided by the sector, built to stay useful

The Cheese Hub is designed to support cheesemakers, cheesemongers and partners with practical digital tools, shared campaigns, learning, community and insight.

Good governance helps make sure the Hub grows in the right way. It means the Hub is not shaped by guesswork, trends or one person’s opinion. It is guided by real businesses, sector knowledge, member feedback, useful evidence and clear priorities.

The aim is simple: to keep the Cheese Hub practical, fair, useful and focused on helping the cheese sector save time, reduce costs and grow with more confidence.

Why governance matters

The Cheese Hub brings together knowledge, campaigns, tools, community, projects, insights and AI support in one shared place. That creates a big opportunity, but it also needs care.

Governance helps us decide what to build, what to improve, what to prioritise and how to make sure the Hub keeps serving the people it was created for. It helps us avoid duplication, reduce wasted effort, listen properly to members and make decisions that support the whole community, not just the loudest voices in the room.

How the Hub is governed

The Cheese Hub is built and operated by Lighthouse, but it is shaped by the sector. Lighthouse is responsible for running the platform, managing the digital infrastructure, coordinating content, developing campaigns, supporting members and keeping the Hub moving forward.

The wider community helps shape what the Hub becomes. That input comes through member feedback, playbook surveys, campaign results, community conversations, supporter involvement, project ideas and the Strategy Group. This gives the Hub a clear operating base, while still making space for sector influence, challenge and improvement.

Our governance principles

Built by Lighthouse, shaped by the sector

Lighthouse manages the platform and keeps the work moving, but the Hub should not feel like something dropped onto the sector from the outside. Members help shape priorities, test ideas, suggest improvements and highlight the real problems they need help with.

Practical before perfect

The Hub exists to help busy cheese businesses take useful action. Governance should support progress, not slow everything down with unnecessary process. We would rather test, learn and improve than wait until every detail is perfect.

Open to feedback

Everything in the Hub can be improved. Playbooks, campaign kits, templates, tools, workshops and AI experiments should all be open to feedback from the people using them. If something is unclear, too complicated, not useful enough or missing an important detail, we want to know.

Healthy competition is welcome

The Hub supports collaboration without pretending that competition does not exist. Cheesemakers and cheesemongers can learn together, share ideas and benefit from common tools while still protecting their own personality, customer relationships and commercial edge.

Useful for different types of cheese business

The Hub needs to work for different business types, including makers, mongers, wholesalers, educators, event hosts and partners. Not every resource will be right for everyone, but the overall direction should consider the needs of the wider cheese community.

Responsible use of AI and technology

AI and shared digital tools can save time, but they must be used carefully. The Hub will focus on practical, checked and useful AI support, not generic content for the sake of it. Human judgement, sector experience and real business knowledge remain essential.

Continuous improvement

The Cheese Hub will not stand still. We will use feedback, data, campaign performance, member questions and sector changes to improve what already exists and decide what comes next.

The governance model

Lighthouse

Lighthouse is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Cheese Hub. This includes the website, member platform, content planning, campaign development, tools, templates, HubSpot setup, reporting, communications and ongoing improvement. Lighthouse also makes sure work is delivered, maintained and commercially sustainable.

Strategy Group

The Strategy Group helps guide the bigger decisions. Its role is to provide advice, challenge, feedback and sector perspective so the Hub stays useful, responsible and connected to real needs.

The Strategy Group does not run the Hub day to day. It helps shape direction, test assumptions, identify risks and support collaboration. In simple terms, the Strategy Group helps the Hub do the right thing.

Members

Members are the most important source of practical feedback. They use the playbooks, campaigns, tools, templates and community spaces. Their experience helps show what is working, what is unclear and what should be improved next.

Member feedback may come through surveys, comments, community discussions, support requests, workshops, interviews or campaign results.

Supporters and partners

Supporters and partners help the Hub grow faster. They may contribute funding, expertise, visibility, tools, content, data, training or sector access.

Supporters can help shape early priorities, but their involvement should support the wider Hub mission, not pull it away from the needs of members.

Project and working groups

Some ideas may need focused input from a smaller group. This could include a campaign group, AI experiment group, insights group, ecommerce group, events group or regional collaboration group. These groups help test specific ideas, gather feedback and move useful projects forward.

How decisions are made

When deciding what to build, improve or prioritise, we look at a few simple questions.

  • Does this help cheesemakers, cheesemongers or partners solve a real problem?
  • Will it save time, reduce cost, improve confidence, support sales or make digital work easier?
  • Can it be reused by more than one business?
  • Can members apply it in their own way, without becoming copycat versions of each other?
  • Is it simple enough for busy people to use?
  • Do we have feedback, evidence or a clear reason to do it?
  • Can we maintain it properly?
  • Does it fit the purpose of the Cheese Hub?

Not every good idea can be built straight away. Governance helps us choose the ideas that will make the biggest practical difference.

How feedback improves the Hub

Feedback is not an add-on. It is part of how the Hub works.

The basic improvement loop is:

  • Listen to members.
  • Spot common needs, questions or barriers.
  • Prioritise the most useful improvements.
  • Test simple versions.
  • Collect feedback.
  • Improve the resource.
  • Share what has changed.

This applies to playbooks, campaign kits, templates, tools, workshops, AI experiments and wider Hub features.

Content and resource standards

Every Cheese Hub resource should be useful, practical and easy to apply.

Before we publish or improve a resource, we ask whether it is:

  • Clear enough for a busy cheese business to understand.
  • Specific enough to be useful.
  • Flexible enough for different businesses to adapt.
  • Written in plain English.
  • Connected to a real outcome.
  • Free from unnecessary jargon.
  • Supported by examples where possible.
  • Open to improvement through feedback.

The Hub should help people take action, not make digital marketing feel more complicated than it needs to be.

AI governance

AI will be part of the Cheese Hub, but it will not replace human experience, sector knowledge or judgement. We use AI to help members save time, create better first drafts, organise ideas, improve workflows and explore new possibilities. We do not want the Hub to flood the sector with generic, duplicated or unhelpful content.

Where AI is used, the guidance should help members add their own business knowledge, local detail, product range, customer questions, tone of voice and point of view. The goal is not to make every cheese business sound the same. The goal is to help each business use AI with more confidence, care and personality.

Data and insight governance

The Insights Hub will help the sector learn from shared patterns, benchmarks and results. Where data is used, it should be handled responsibly and with a clear purpose.

Shared insight should help members understand what is working, where opportunities exist and how they can improve.

The Hub should not expose sensitive business information without permission. When benchmarks, campaign results or examples are shared, they should be presented in a way that protects individual businesses unless they have agreed to be named.

Transparency

The Hub should be clear about what is being built, what is being tested and what is still at an early stage.

Some resources will be polished and ready to use. Others may be experiments, pilots or early versions. That is fine, as long as members understand the difference.

Where possible, we will explain why something exists, who it is for, how it should be used and how members can give feedback.

What governance is not

Governance does not mean every decision needs a committee.

  • It does not mean slowing down useful work.
  • It does not mean trying to please everyone at once.
  • It does not mean removing Lighthouse’s responsibility to run the platform properly.

Good governance gives the Hub enough structure to make wise decisions, while still keeping the energy, speed and usefulness that small businesses need.

What this means for members

As a member, you should feel that the Cheese Hub is something you can use, shape and benefit from. You do not need to attend meetings or understand governance processes to have a voice.

You can help by using the resources, sharing feedback, asking questions, suggesting ideas, joining discussions, testing campaigns and telling us what would make your life easier.

Small bits of feedback are useful. A quick comment, a survey response, a question in the community or an example from your own business can all help improve the Hub for everyone.

Help shape the Cheese Hub

The Cheese Hub will grow through shared learning, practical feedback and useful collaboration.

If you are a cheesemaker, cheesemonger, supplier, educator, supporter or sector partner, your perspective can help make the Hub stronger. Join the community, share your feedback, suggest an idea or get involved in a project that matters to you.
